Redbacks add bite to IPL auction

The West End Redbacks have had a strong showing in the latest Indian Premier League auctions which concluded over the weekend.

Five Redbacks have been selected by five of the Indian franchises with Dan Christian, Michael Klinger, Aiden Blizzard and Callum Ferguson joining Shaun Tait in one of cricket’s most lucrative tournaments.

Christian, who had a strong outing in last year’s Airtel Champions League Twenty20 tournament in South Africa, was chosen by the Deccan Chargers.

Redbacks captain Michael Klinger will get a chance to play alongside names such as Indian VVS Laxman and Sri Lankan Mahela Jayawardene after he was selected for new side Kochi.

Blizzard, one of the Redbacks’ offseason recruits, will play for the Mumbai Indians, joining Redbacks teammate Kieron Pollard.

After returning from a knee injury by scoring 200 runs during the Champions League in South Africa, Ferguson has been rewarded with a contract with the other newcomers, the Pune Warriors.

Tait, who took 10 wickets from his eight matches last season, will remain a Rajasthan Royal after been awarded a new contract.

In all, 139 players were selected in the two-day extravaganza. The focus is now on April 8, when the 2011 Indian Premier League gets underway.
