Redbacks through to the Airtel Champions League Twenty20 semi-finals

cricketThe South Australian Redbacks have progressed to the Airtel Champions League Twenty20 semi-finals undefeated, after beating Guyana by 15 runs at the Wanders Stadium in Johannesburg.

The Redbacks put up a competitive total of 6-191, before Guyana put up a good chase to fall 15 runs short with a score of 7-176.

“I’m not sure how many people tipped us to be 4-0 at this stage and that’s a great result but we have some work to do before Saturday and I know everyone in the squad is looking forward to that challenge,” captain Michael Klinger said after the game.

The Redbacks innings started with a slight hiccup when they slipped to 3-41, before the middle and lower order lifted the score. Callum Ferguson was man of the match with a score of 55 and received good support from Cameron Borgas (48) and Dan Christian (23), while Klinger (16) retained the mantle of leading run-scorer in the tournament. Dan Christian also took two wickets to become the tournament’s leading wicket-taker.

The Redbacks will train on Thursday and Friday ahead of their semi-final on the 25th September at Centurion, with their opponent yet to be determined. The match will be broadcast in Australia on ONE HD.

In other cricket news, the South Australian Cricket Association has released Redbacks fast bowler Peter George from the Champions League Twenty20 squad, so that he is able to join the Australian Test squad assembling in India in time to play in the lead-in tour match if selected.

Redbacks coach Mark Sorell said that the SACA High Performance unit saw Australian obligations as a high priority.

“Our program is about producing Australian players as well as team success,” Sorell said.

SACA Director of Cricket Jamie Cox said; “Peter has played an important support role in the Redbacks success so far in the Champions League and will be missed. He has worked extremely hard during the past couple of seasons and this is a well-deserved opportunity.
