Rejoice! The Original Wirra Wirra Church Block Is Back

Back by popular demand, ‘The Original Church Block’ now stands side by side with ‘The Church Block’

As the cooler months start closing in on us, we find ourselves gravitating towards those warming winter reds and we certainly have our favourites. One of our go-tos is the Wirra Wirra Church Block.

But the Church Block recipe wasn’t always made this way you know. The original blend created in 1972 was a blend from Grenache and Shiraz. It was later adapted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Merlot. And while this new blend certainly has a place in our hearts, the saying “if it’s broke, don’t fix it” is all too true. Fans wanted the OG blend back. So, Wirra Wirra listened.

The Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Merlot is The Church Block and the Grenache, Shiraz blend (original 1972 recipe) is now “The Original Blend”.

The 2016 Original Blend is their first red wine release from that vintage and once again reflects a gentle treatment and minimal oak influence. The wine spent just nine months in seasoned French oak barrels to let the fruit shine. It’s soft, bright and eminently drinkable.

While the interest in every release of this wine demands drinkability from the outset, there is no doubt that the 2015 Church Block represents a definite cellaring opportunity for those who like to trawl trough their back catalogue occasionally.

If you’re looking for a red to warm yourself up this winter you can’t go past either one of these beauties really.

Wirra Wirra is located at Cnr Strout and McMurtrie Roads, McLaren Vale.
