Legendary Renée Geyer can do no wrong in the eyes and ears of her fans. Her voice may be rougher and her range more limited, but after four decades & 23 albums, this 2005 ARIA Hall of Fame inductee can still get the fans gushing long after the concert is over.

Songs like It’s a Man’s World, Difficult Woman, Moon River, My Funny Valentine and Midnight Train to Georgia had the audience swaying in their seats, clapping and getting up to dance.

The excellent three piece band (Phillip on bass, Bruce on keyboard and Jeff on guitar) almost upstage the star with their playing. It’s abysmal however, that the dreadful backlighting on the Spiegeltent stage shines in the eyes of the audience, making it near impossible for many punters to see Geyer (and the superb bass solo) for much of the show.

Geyer herself has a charming, casual air but struggled to relate to the audience, preferring to banter mostly off-mic with her band. There were several fumbles and inappropriate remarks, but her confidence built as the concert progressed, with the encore being one of the best numbers in the show.

Geyer has been through tough times of late, with a Melbourne court appearance only 3 days ago for her second car accident in four months, and surviving a breast cancer diagnosis in 2009. She continued to perform during her cancer treatments, highlighting her extraordinary commitment to her art. The strain of these recent events seems evident in her persona however, but there is no doubt she’s Heading in the Right Direction.

Fans were delighted with the concert and rightly so.
