This March, Renew Adelaide is set to spice up Adelaide’s west end with a brand new, mini arts festival dubbed Westbound. Held around North Terrace’s Lion Arts Precinct on Saturday March 15th, this free, curated fiesta will feature an artisan market, food trucks, workshops, pop-up bars, and a lineup of some of Adelaide’s hottest musical talent.

Supported by the City of Adelaide’s City Activation Program, Renew Adelaide has organised Westbound to showcase local creators and highlight the city’s creative culture during Fringe season.

In the marketplace, shoppers can browse a hand-picked selection of nearly 30 stalls, each hosted by emerging and established creatives, including Cadell Canute, Pith Jewellery, Faebel, Chicky Ceramics, SALT GANG and more. Think colourful ceramics, fashion, vinyl records, fine art prints, jarred pickles, handmade jewellery, and so much more.

Some of Adelaide’s most exciting musicians and bands will be performing, headlined by electronic jazz extraordinaire Alexander Flood. Post-punk group The Empty Threats and art-folk quintet Any Young Mechanic will also be lighting up the stage, alongside emerging jazz-funk band Live Slug Reaction and indie pop hitmaker Ebony A Million. To keep the vibes high, WET//DREEMS and Romi will also be performing DJ sets into the evening.

Beyond the live entertainment, attendees can also participate in a range of free, artist-run workshops like lino printing with Kerri Wright or pottery with ceramicist JamFactory studio artist Lotte Schwerdtfeger. Blip Art School will also be hosting matchbox art workshops for kids and families.

To keep the adults refreshed, pop-up bars will be hosted by Bowden Brewing, Adelaide Hills winery Unico Zelo, and Port Adelaide distillery McGregor & Young. And whether it’s a quick bite or a hearty meal you’re after, some of Adelaide’s best street food vendors will be on-site dishing out woodfired pizza, porchetta, vegan treats, ice cream, and more.

Since 2010, Renew Adelaide has been activating vacant spaces in the city to help launch unique business concepts using a rent-free model. The team operates throughout the CBD, but keep a keen eye on the west end, with recent projects including studio art gallery Household and Cosmo’s Pizza on Hindley Street.

While Westbound marks new territory for Renew Adelaide, CEO Gianna Murphy views the festival as a logical extension of their mission to support creative local businesses and make the city a more exciting place to be.

“The west end has so much to offer – a thriving artist community, incredible live music venues, a diverse blend of eateries and bars,” Gianna says. “With Westbound, we’re working with local makers, musicians and arts operators to capture the creative spirit of the precinct and remind people that they can explore it any day of the year.

So for a free, family-friendly event that combines local creatives, live music, and Renew Adelaide’s ongoing venture to spice up the streets of Adelaide, check out Westbound festival on Saturday, March 15.
