Every year, East End Cellars pulls its resources together to support a great cause, during the year’s coldest months. 2024 is no different, with the annual Soup Kitchen returning this August for its sixth year.
The event aims to support South Australians experiencing homelessness by raising funds for Hutt Street Centre and Catherine House. Each Thursday during the month, patrons can enjoy a soup lunch prepared by some of Adelaide’s most respected chefs.
This year’s line-up includes Africola’s Duncan Welgemoed, Sharon & David Swain from Fino Vino, and Chianti’s Josh Cooke. A special guest chef will also be announced soon.
Each soup bowl will be sold at $20, accompanied by a side of crusty bread, with vegan and vegetarian options also available. All proceeds from the sales will be donated to the partnered charities.
Margie Andrewartha, owner of East End Cellars, shared, “We’re excited to once again join forces with like-minded chefs in Adelaide and encourage city-goers to come down on their lunch break to support this noteworthy cause,” she said. She also said that apart from serving soup, a silent auction will be held during each event to further support the fundraising efforts.
To facilitate additional donations, QR codes will be accessible at the event for digital contributions. These donations are tax-deductible, providing patrons with receipts shortly after their contributions.
The needs addressed by the funds raised are significant. Hutt Street Centre outlines that a donation of $350 can feed 200 people for a day, while $50 helps provide essential services such as a hot shower, laundry facilities, and a personal locker for three months. Just $10 more than the cost of a soup lunch, $30 can provide meals for two weeks for an individual facing homelessness.
Similarly, at Catherine House, which focuses on support for women, $300 can fund casework support including health care and housing services. A $152 donation supports one night of crisis accommodation for a woman, and $50 allows for the provision of a Welcome Pack to women arriving at the service.
In an extension of their charity efforts, East End Cellars has partnered with The Star of Greece to host a regional Soup Kitchen. Beginning August 3rd, the Kiosk will offer takeaway soup every Saturday of the month. Available options include Chef Mike Collins’ Sweet Potato and Leek Soup or Margie Andrewartha’s own recipe for Pea and Ham Soup. These will be available from 12 noon until sold out, at $20 per serving, with all proceeds donated.
There will be a dine-in experience available for patrons, as well as takeaway options. Bookings can be made directly through the website – eastendcellars.com.au.
This series of events not only offers a chance for the community to enjoy delicious, chef-prepared soups, but also, and more importantly, to contribute to a vital cause during the colder months, aiding those in dire need within the community.
The Soup Kitchen initiative at East End Cellars commences on Thursday, 1st August.
Doors open at 12 noon every Thursday in August.
