A massive rescue mission is currently underway in the state’s Riverland to save a mob of kangaroos stranded in rising floodwaters.
It’s believed more than 60 kangaroos are stuck on a dry patch of land in Blanchetown, a small township on the bank of the Murray River.
A team of volunteers have joined a local vet and vet nurses to carry out the rescue, which will include sedating the animals.
Once rescued, they will be transported via boat and 4WD to higher, safer ground.
As told to 7 News this afternoon wildlife vet nurse Kerry Machado said the roos had limited access to food and water.
“When I got out there, I was not prepared for what I saw,” she said.
“They were totally surrounded by water. They had limited access to food. They have only got contaminated river water to drink”.
It’s believed today is the only time the roos can be saved as the waters continue to rise.
