Riverland’s iconic Big Orange is gearing up for an impressive comeback. The familiar 15m high structure near Berri, once a popular tourist spot, is getting a $1.5 million makeover.
Big Orange Brewing Co. is at the helm of this transformation, turning the dormant attraction into a bustling brewery, distillery, and restaurant.
The Big Orange, a landmark since the late 1970s, had shut down in the early 2000s. Its reopening signifies a new chapter, reviving the site’s former glory. Plans, approved earlier in April, are paving the way for a unique culinary and beverage experience in the heart of Riverland.
The redevelopment will feature a 370 square meter restaurant with outdoor verandah dining, catering to over 100 guests. Patrons can look forward to a variety of local beers, gins, and whiskeys, with the facility expected to produce around 4000 drinks per week.
In keeping with its roots, the Big Orange itself will be refurbished, offering a deck and a viewing platform for visitors to enjoy panoramic views of the area. Alongside this, the ground will be beautified with newly planted orange trees, enhancing the site’s charm.
The restaurant and bar aim to be a new hotspot, open from 10 am to midnight every day. Meanwhile, the Big Orange will operate as a tourist spot from Monday to Saturday, inviting a new wave of visitors to explore its allure.
The project is more than a facelift; it’s a fusion of the past with a fresh, modern twist. It’s a commitment to bringing back a slice of Riverland’s history with a new purpose and energy. As the site prepares to reopen, it’s poised to become a key attraction, blending local heritage with contemporary leisure and dining.
The Big Orange’s revival is set to inject new life into Berri and the Riverland region. With this venture, the Big Orange is ready to reclaim its spot as a beloved destination, offering a unique blend of history, dining, and local produce.
