Review: 2 One Another

Taking its name from the actions and reactions of the performers to each other, Artistic Director Rafael Bonachela’s choreography is both intricate and repetitive, mutating repeated actions into evolving complex combinations of movements. It’s about connections and disconnections; romance, competition, fear and loneliness.

The dance begins in silence before introducing Nick Wales’ marvellous soundscapes that seamlessly blend baroque with electronica and snatches of Samuel Webster’s original poetry. Rigid movements segue into rigid lines as the dancers enter, exit and cross the stage, breaking form to respond, lead, follow, separate and return to the fold.

Tony Assness’ set comprises a bare stage with a LED curtain backdrop that features intricate patterns of lighting. The patterns range from starlight twinkles to shocking brightness with embryonic configurations in between. The simplicity and complexity of the designs are suggestive of both the simplistic and complex nature of the dancers’ changing relationships.

The Sydney Dance Company was last seen in Adelaide in 2009, and this short season is a welcome return.
