Review: Australian Cabaret Summer School Showcase

2013 Australian Cabaret Summer School ShowcasePresented by Matthew Carey and Catherine Campbell
Reviewed Saturday 12th January 2013

The Australian Cabaret Summer School, which is now in its third successful year, culminated in a night of performances by the participants. Run by Matthew Carey and Catherine Campbell, the week long intensive course is taught by them and a few special guests, this year including Johanna Allen, who covers all the bases from cabaret to opera, and who has a role in a State Opera of SA production this year.

Last year, Jenny Wynter came down from Queensland to participate in the Summer School. This year, Angela Yeoh flew in from Hong Kong to be a part of it. That says so much about the high regard people already have for these events, and how quickly the word is spreading far and wide. It might soon be time for a name change to the International Cabaret Summer School.

The showcase once again clearly indicated the high quality of the teaching, with some very strong performances displayed. The training focuses on all aspects of performance and the ten artists had taken time to consider their entire presentation. For the nine ladies this, of course, included hair, make-up, and clothing, and there were some very impressive outfits on stage.

The format for the evening was a mini cabaret act from each of the performers, with Megan Doherty, Shelley Dunstone, Angela Yeoh, Megan Donald, and David Salter before the interval, then Georgia Darcy, Casmira Hambledon, Jennifer Degrassi, Shaez Mortimer, and Bronwyn Palmer in the second half. Each person presented three songs with a linking personal narrative and these ranged from hilarious to poignant.

Audiences had the choice of sitting near the stage in cabaret format, sipping on some fine wines purchased by the bottle or glass, or sitting a little further back in theatre seating.

If you missed this showcase you still have a chance to catch some of the performers as they will be touring as part of the Out Of The Square (OOTS) programme during February. Full details and bookings can be found on the OOTS web site their web site.
