Review: Flume – The Infinity Prism Tour

FLUMEElectronic music producer, Flume, performed tracks off his self-titled album to a sold out crowd at the Thebarton Theatre on Wednesday night as part of his ‘Infinity Prism’ tour.

Flume (aka Harley Streten) is not your average 21 year old. Flume’s debut album was only released in November last year but reached number 1 on the Australian iTunes charts, four of his songs (including a remix) were listed on the Triple J Hottest 100 for 2012 (‘Holdin On’ was number 4) and his national tour sold out in mere minutes.

In 12 months he’s gone from being a virtual unknown to one of the biggest acts in the country. He has also become one of those mythical artists to cross over smoothly from the indie music scene into more mainstream music. Not an easy feat.

Even if you don’t generally like electronic, DJ driven music, chances are you’ll still like Flume.

Which explains why the Thebby was packed with sweaty teenagers for the concert, who had convinced their parents to let them out on a school night! Flume’s appeal is huge and he knows how to pull a crowd and get them excited.

Flume has developed the ‘Infinity Prism’ light show for the tour which not only gives the kids something pretty to look at, but adds another element to the concert which could essentially just be a dude with a laptop and decks, making noise on a stage.

But boy, does he make some pretty good noise. I enjoyed listening to everyone try to sing along to tracks that were essentially just a bunch of different electronic noises.

Sometimes, you just don’t need words.

It wasn’t quite a full on dance party, but it did get pretty wild. It was a great crowd – there were hardcore fans and people who generally appreciated the music.

Flume is a bit of an introvert but he seems to have come out of his shell recently and he interacted with the crowd on and off during the concert. I couldn’t hear what he was saying, but I’m sure it was amazing.

The only downside to the concert was that it all wrapped up at 10:30pm. It’s been a while since I went to an all ages gig but I would have like to have heard more from Flume and his bestie Chet Faker (who is supporting the tour).

Chet Faker has one of the most beautiful voices I have ever heard and his electro-soul music will make you swoon.

He was first noticed because of his cover of 90s hit ‘No Diggity’ by Blackstreet. His album ‘Thinking In Textures’ is a moving collection of music and songs like ‘I’m Into You’ literally make my heart hurt. Plus he has an amazing beard. What’s not to love?

Did I mention he’s only 23? What’s up with all these artists making the rest of us feel like we haven’t done anything with our lives?

The highlight of the concert was the preview of Flume’s new track with Chet Faker. I for one am super excited to hear more from this pair.

If this concert was a summary of everything Flume has managed to to achieve by the tender age of 21, I can’t wait to see what he’ll do next.
