Review: High Voltage At The Gov Fri 21 Oct.

Microsoft Word - High voltage sign A3 number 2ff.docxBlack t-shirt, check. Black jeans, check. Time to get my rock on to AC/DC tribute band High Voltage!  They’ve been on the scene for a while now and in this time the 5-piece band have channelled their inner AC/DC to beer soaked audiences who wouldn’t get to see the real AC/DC as often as they like.

Wandering around The Gov was a sea of middle aged men and women, many probably witnessed Bon Scott tear it up back in 70s at the Largs Pier Hotel. And still wearing the faded t-shirt to prove it!

The first notes of “Thunderstruck” boomed out of the speakers much to the joy of this packed crowd. Note for note, lick for lick, if I closed my eyes, it was like Angus was ripping it up in front of me.

The set consisted of their better known tracks from the first single, “Can I Sit Next To You Girl”, right up to today. The best thing about the show was the obvious joy the band loved playing all these classic tracks. Having witnessed a few cover bands over the years, you can tell some are in it for the money. High Voltage played each track true to form and didn’t ruin the experience for the fans.

High Voltage singer, known just as John A, is the kind of guy you want to be in your band. He channelled both Bon Scott and Brian Johnson perfectly. It was great watching him transform from Bon on “Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap”, to Brian on “Hells Bells” effortlessly. John sprawled around the stage and the crowd during all time classics as “Shoot To Thrill”, “You Shook Me All Night Long”, “TNT”, “Highway To Hell” and “Back In Black”. The fuelled crowd shouting back the well engrained lyrics at every given moment.

The crowd were taken on an Australian music history lesson tonight. The AC/DC legacy will never fade away.
