Full of energy, Carla Anita entered the stage and started with a fun version of “Don’t Tell Mama” from Cabaret, which she and her small backing ensemble enjoyed along with the audience. This was followed with a rendition of “There are Worse Things I Could Do”, Rizzo’s song from Grease, which was less successful.

The show comprised of a mixed bag of songs, some suited to the singer’s style and some not so, however the level of commitment to the audience entertainment never wavered and Carla’s presentation was always good. Her patter between songs was less confident and her choice of material meant that she was sometimes striving for a connection which was not there.

She had a great sense of fun. The songs “I Hope You Die” and “Keep Moving the Line” saved the performance but although her understanding and delivery was competent, often her pitch let her down. She looked great and was obviously supported by a friendly audience despite some songs better left undone.

Excellent backing was provided by Thomas Saunders on keys, Gordon Goth on bass and Brody Thomas Green on drums, percussion and backing vocals. There was a good rapport between the singer and group, most obvious in “Life of the Party” and “Beginning to See the Light”.

Carla related well to her audience, delivered the humour, donned tap shoes to do a duet with drummer Brody and interacted with audience members. The inclusion of the Leonard Cohen number “Hallelujah” to please a family member was a mistake. It only showed vocal flaws and exposed her inexperience.

A solo show is a bit confronting for a performer, but I’m sure she will only improve as she gains more experience
