Last night the sumptuous, sassy diva that is Mariah Carey brought her The Elusive Chanteuse World Tour to Adelaide with support act Nathaniel, a runner up in the 2013 series of X-Factor.

Carey, who last played in Australia for her Butterfly World Tour in 1998, stunned the mostly female crowd with her amazing vocal range and hilarious diva attitude.

Playing an array of hits across the decades, Carey reminded us all of why she’s still queen.

Though the best-selling female artist of the millennium in 2000 isn’t as youthful as she once was (she has aged gracefully, might we add), her vocal chords haven’t changed a bit. Whilst her first few songs, most of which were her newer ones, looked and sounded like they were lip synched, the rest of the show most certainly wasn’t and she hit those high notes like was 1999.

After a near 30 minute wait after support act Nathaniel, Carey was ushered on stage wearing a bedazzled corset and a silky champagne miniskirt. The centre wasn’t at full capacity, but we certainly couldn’t tell by the volume of screams when the blonde bombshell opened the show with Fantasy.

Much like Nathaniel, Carey spent a great deal of the show talking to the crowd between songs. Unlike Nathaniel, Carey’s whimsical and sometimes nonsensical ramblings captured the heart of the crowd.

The class act adopted a British accent during her most divalicious moments, “daaarling, this is just me, I can’t help it”, as a team of four hair, make up and stagehands touch her up on stage in front of the crowd.

Mariah had two lengthy costume changes throughout the performance, looking busty but flawless in them all. These lengthy cuts in performance were broken up by the introduction of all band members, back-up singers and dancers.

A definite stand out and crowd favourite of the night was when the pop-goddess wowed the crowd with her hit song Hero. It wouldn’t be a Mariah show without her rendition of All I Want For Christmas, pulling Nathaniel back on stage to complete the song in a duet.

She closed the show with a personal favourite, We Belong Together, giving the crowd one last reminder that she still has it and each and every one of us still know every word.
