Everyone has that guilty pleasure song they’ll blast in the car, but cut the volume when they stop at the lights … for fear of society uncovering their secret shame. Whether it be ABBA, The Seekers, or perhaps you’re a closeted “Belieber”.

With her debut solo performance Musical Skeletons in My Closet, Alison Kimber is here to challenge us to accept those songs we hold close to our heart (whatever the reason may be) and that, perhaps, show us there’s nothing to be ashamed of at all.

Kimber is accompanied by adept pianist Emma Knights (producer of the wonderful Cabaret Fringe production, Space Encounters). The duo have a remarkable stage relationship. Kimber tells us her story of growing up loving those songs that are just a little bit left of centre and how this impacted her relationship development with her friends and family. What do these songs tell us about ourselves? Her powerful opening with ‘The Sound of Music’ set the scene for some heart-filled renditions of those booming ballads we all secretly have a fondness for.

Kimber’s banter between songs is humorous and adequately bridges the gap between her different tales. Her strength is her ability to invite the audience into her own stories, sharing her experiences and values. Kimber sings well; her forte are her versions of Broadway Diva-esque performances such as Evita. Another moving performance was Advance Australia Fair, which silenced the rather verbal, but accommodating audience with awe.

It is clear Kimber had a very strong support base in the audience, including family, friends, etc. It was an enjoyable experience, leaving a resounding theme of taking joy in what you love, regardless of what the rest of the world thinks of it. Be loud, be proud.
