Review: New Coat of Paint: The Songs of Tom Waits – Feast Festival 2012

Anyone who hasn’t experienced New Coat of Paint is missing out, and that’s the truth.

New Coat of Paint is not your average cover band. It is a re-creation, a reinterpreted, re-telling of classic music of Tom Waits. In fact, I preferred a couple of New Coat of Paints’ versions of Waits’ songs and, as a Waits fan, this, I know, is sacrilege, but true!

There’s nothing to disappoint a fan here and plenty to rekindle new likings for old songs and new, and this most talented of bands will undoubtedly gather new fans to this music and themselves.

Lead singer Alison Coppe has the confidence, vocal range and voice reminiscent of a young Bette Midler, effortlessly allowing her voice to suggest the lyrics’ own ease and sleaze, sex and good times, bars and drinks, so bring it on! She makes these songs of Waits her own and, as she sings, the audience is transported to a bar somewhere, anywhere, where everyone is just chilling and enjoying the music. She fronts a multitalented group of very polished musicians, with keyboards tinkled appropriately in true Waits’ style by Aaron Nash, pure energy from drummer and duet vocalist David Mazzarelli, driving beats from “Ace of Bass” Michael Ciaramella, fabulous multi-instrumentalist (from lead guitar, to trombone, drums and more) Luke Ferguson, and what would Tom Waits be without saxophone, of course, beautifully blown by the classy Giovanni Clemente?

Together they took us on a journey through Night Hawks at the Diner, Franks Wild Years, Mule Variations, Swordfish Trombone, and more, which went all too quickly. This is a journey I look forward to repeating.
