Review: Oktoberfest In The Gardens

This weekend saw Adelaide host Oktoberfest in the Gardens for its seventh year, after much success in Perth, Sydney and Melbourne. You would have been forgiven for mistakenly thinking you were in Munich for the day, as the Wayville Showground was convincingly transformed into an authentic indoor and outdoor German beerhall. The ladies wore their best dirndls, the lads their charming lederhosen, and the occasional punter enthusiastically sported a beer stein costume – talk about dedication!

Two main stages showcased the best German themed local talent. One act was particularly memorable, as a four-piece brass band ended with a cover of ‘Am I Every Gonna See Your Face Again’ by Aussie rock legends The Angels. This Aussie-meets-German rendition of the song went down a treat with the crowd, as the whole pavilion sang along.

Channeling a music festival kind of vibe, a separate area was fenced off for a silent disco with some great techno, house and pop-remix beats. It was busier in there than you would have believed, and the sight of people dressed in dirndls and lederhosen dancing to club music is not one I will soon forget.

Drinks were flowing, namely beer, at the 18+ event, and the most glorious looking and smelling German food was being served. You could buy a whole pork hock with crackling, a German delicacy, for just $20. But would you believe it, the hock was not even the most impressive dish on offer! Metre long hotdogs were readily available for purchase, and there were plenty of them being consumed. The festival itself could have been an unofficial food eating competition, because the sheer size and quantity of it there was something to marvel at.

If you missed out this year, not to worry, because Oktoberfest in the Gardens will be back again next year. So bring your lederhosen, and most importantly, your appetite!
