Review: Random – Come Out Festival 2013

Random
Presented by State Theatre Company

Random is a one hander about a Jamaican family in the UK and how the course of a single day can be changed through a random act of violence.

Zindzi Okenyo plays the whole family, including father, mother, brother and sister and transitions between them with precision and energy, making the first half of this performance a humorous insight into the lives of working class immigrants.

The rhythmic language of Jamaican slang is sometimes difficult to understand but Okenyo’s ability to display the right nuances gets the message across aptly.

With the arrival of unwelcome guests and even more unwelcome news, Random transforms into a dark and stirring story of loss, and how family ties are tested in difficult times, particularly the death of a loved one.

The finale is moving as Okenyo brings the audience into her world of hurt and desolation. Alone and left with only an imprint of a loved one, she struggles to come to terms with the day’s events but ultimately resigns herself to the love for her family as her salvation.

Random is a stark reminder that life can change in the blink of an eye, and not to take things for granted. The appreciative opening night audience no doubt took that home with them.
