Review: SUPAFEST 2010

This week Adelaide played host to SUPAFEST (previously known as JamFest) at the Wayville Showgrounds.

This brand new, ALL AGES music event celebrates fresh, chart-topping pop, hip hop and R’n’B culture with over 5 hours of non-stop live music.

EveHeadlining Adelaide’s Supafest this year was some of the hottest artists dominating the charts today: Kelly Rowland, Pitbull, Sean Paul, Jay Sean, Eve as well as our very own number one Hip Hop DJ Nino Brown.

Unfortunately, Wayville Showgrounds was not on its best display. Despite the abundance of tickets sold and indoor pavilions available, organisers chose to hold the event outside on a very cold Adelaide night.  The greatest disappointment however, was the cancellation by main act Akon, which with its short notice to ticket holders caused many tears and frustration to some die-hard fans.

First act to take the stage was Chris Sorbello, with her debut single ‘So Lonely’. Recently licensed to Ministry of Sound Australia, her entrancing voice, electric sound, and chic style is a force to be reckoned with.

With tattoos splashed over her body and a full pout that fills her with attitude, Eve followed and strutted the stage with a two tone lycra suit and a pair of ghetto-fabulous canary heels. Her new album is due for release in mid 2010 and Adelaide fans were the first to hear her new songs heavily influenced by dub step, a high energy hip hop. Not to forget her more commercial stylings of such tracks including ‘Who’s That Girl’, ‘Let Me Blow Ya Mind’ feat Gwen Stefani; and ‘Gangsta Lovin’ feat. Alicia Keys.

The heat continued to turn up on what was a very chilly Adelaide night when “pinup boy” Jay Sean entered the arena with his soulful acoustic rendition of “Do You Remember”. The first UK artist to be signed by iconic hip hop label Cash Money, Jay Sean already has two internationally acclaimed albums to his name and #1 Australian single, “Down”. His playful antics and comedic manner entertained, while his hidden talent of beat boxing kept the crowd in awe and wanting more of this London born entertainer.

Cropped with a brazen mohawk and styled with a crisp white shirt and tie, Jamaican dancehall superstar Sean Paul burnt up the stage performing his singles including the smash hit which featured Beyonce ‘Baby Boy’, ‘Gimme the Light’, ‘Temperature’, ‘We Are Burnin’, ‘So Fine’, and the brand new single off his current album ‘Imperial Blaze’ ‘Hold My Hand’. The Kingston-born rhyme slinger pushed all boundaries, amping the crowd to new heights and bringing a flavour of the tropics that would have otherwise be missed.

Still enjoying chart success with ‘Hotel Room Service’ and ‘I Know You Want Me (Calle Ocho)’, Pitbull brought a fresh Latino edge with a deep Miami influence to the stage. Suited in a charcoal three piece and dark shades, Pitbull uniquely blended hip hop, electro house and rock and showed Adelaide his flair for Cuban dance. Playing a lot of samples & covers including Black Eyed Peas and LMFAO’s ‘I’m In Miami Trick’, the bass thumping session resulted in a lots of fist pumps and booty shakes that took the crowd to a new level.

Due to the absence of Akon, the new focal point of the night became the like of multi talented singer Kelly Rowland, who has achieved millions of album sales, smash records and accolades throughout her impressive career. Chants of her name filled the arena awaiting her presence and then ear piercing screams as she entered singing her hit, “Work”. Looking stunning in her one legged black sequenced outfit and long flowing black locks, Kelly did not fail to impress, returning to her Destiny Child roots and finishing the event with her smash hit and “When Love Takes Over” feat. David Guetta.
