Review: The Lucky One

I need to start by saying that after walking the red carpet with hundreds of screaming teenage girls at 'The Lucky One' premiere here in Adelaide, being metres away from the incredibly dreamy Zac Efron himself and eating a whole bag of FruChocs, sitting down and watching a movie in a silent cinema is a bit difficult.

When I finally managed to calm down and concentrate I realised I had missed the start and most important part of the story. Luckily I managed to put it all together but learn from my mistakes!

'The Lucky One' is directed by South Australia's very own Scott Hicks (Shine), which is the reason for the red carpet premiere in Adelaide. Efron plays Marine Sgt. Logan Thibault, who's life is saved when he finds a photo of an unknown woman while on tour in Iraq. Once he returns to the USA, he sets out on a mission to find the woman in the photo (Taylor Schilling) and thank her.

The film is based on the book by Nicholas Sparks. I've always been a fan of Nicholas Sparks' novels and movies; I like the way that you sort of know what you're going to get.

'The Lucky One' was a typical Hollywood romance and it was very 'American'. It doesn't get much more American than a movie that starts in Iraq, with a Marine as the hero who travels to North Carolina to work in a dog kennel and ultimately fall in love with the beautiful single mother.

Zac Efron is very convincing as the brooding Marine, however I had trouble buying Taylor Schilling as his love interest. Something about her seemed too old for Zac and yet too young to be the mother of a young child. But then again, maybe I'm just jealous of her and the fact she got to kiss the former High School Musical star.

If you're a Zefron fan, this movie does contain his first love scene and it's worth a watch just for that. However, it was hard to take it seriously when surrounded by giggling 13 year old girls!

I think Scott Hicks is a beautiful director. The movie was well done and at the end of the day Zac is actually a really good actor.

Despite being slightly predictable and such a typical American romance, it was a feel good movie that I would recommend if you're in the mood for a bit of romance.

Go with the girls though, not the boyfriend.

'The Lucky One' is in cinemas on April 19, 2012.
