Revolutionary dental facility opens in SA, led by esteemed surgeon Dr. Andrew Cheng

Newly redeveloped AOMS facility is transforming dental and maxillofacial care in South Australia under the leadership of renowned surgeon.

Advanced Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery has opened its doors to a redeveloped and purpose-built facility to improve dental and oral maxillofacial surgery services for SA.

Located in the city centre, the hospital’s mission is focused on quality, innovation, and community engagement, aiming to deliver top-tier healthcare that is both accessible and affordable. AOMS is committed to service excellence, while supporting a high percentage of uninsured patients, who represent over 40% of admissions.

The redevelopment is designed to ensure this state-of-the-art hospital can streamline care, while ensuring patients’ needs are met swiftly and effectively.

At the core of AOMS’s values is a strong commitment to diversity and inclusion. This is reflected in their partnerships and programmes which have successfully increased the number of First Nations Peoples accessing the facilities. Currently, 2.19% of the patient population at AOMS identifies as First Nations People, evidencing the hospital’s inclusive approach.

The facility is led by Dr Andrew Cheng, a well-respected Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon with extensive training and experience. Dr Cheng’s academic background includes both dental and medical degrees from the University of Adelaide, and a comprehensive range of experience in fields such as oral surgery, oral pathology, and dental implant surgery.

Apart from his role at AOMS, Dr Cheng is also an active member of the medical community in other capacities. He is a visiting surgeon at the Royal Adelaide Hospital, involved with the Head and Neck Oncology Group focusing on managing oral cancer. Dr Cheng is also committed to education, engaging in the training of surgical trainees, and undergraduate and postgraduate medical and dental students.

His dedication extends beyond the local community through his involvement in international relief efforts. Dr Cheng frequently participates in volunteer missions offering vital dental services to Cambodian orphans and complex surgical assistance to other Cambodian patients, demonstrating his commitment to global health.

In his role as Director of Training for SA and TAS Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Dr Cheng also holds a senior lecturer position at the University of Adelaide, where he is recognised for his significant research contributions in the field of craniomaxillofacial surgery, particularly in trifocal mandibular reconstruction. His work is internationally respected and widely published, contributing valuable insights and advancements to his field.

As the new facilities are launched, AOMS continues to lead medical excellence and compassionate care in South Australia. The hospital’s leadership and dedication to patient-centred approaches are sure to make significant impacts on the health and well-being of the local community.
