Ricky Gervais insists on South Australian wine for his essential backstage setup

The spotlight just keeps getting brighter for SA shiraz, just spotted on award-winning comedian Ricky Gervais’ social media.

It’s been a busy week of stardom for South Australian shiraz, and the spotlight just keeps getting brighter. In its latest brush with fame, a humble $25 bottle of Barossa shiraz has popped up in none other than Ricky Gervais’ dressing room.

Yes, that Ricky. Award-winning comedian, creator of The Office, and the man who roasts Hollywood at the Golden Globes like it’s his day job, which makes his choice all the more impressive. This guy doesn’t hand out praise lightly.

Currently touring the UK with his latest stand-up show Mortality, Ricky gave his 4.2 million Instagram followers a cheeky glimpse behind the curtain on May 8, revealing his essential backstage setup.

The essentials included a packet of KP Original nuts, some grapes and bananas, a dramatic lighting setup, a marble benchtop, and… drum roll please… a bottle of 2022 Château Tanunda Grand Barossa Shiraz.

The caption reads “I am a megastar. So I need things to be right. Just got to my dressing room at The Alban Arena for tonight’s #Mortality show & they’ve lit the fruit all wrong. Unbelievable.”

Clearly, Ricky’s got taste. The Grand Barossa Shiraz 2022 is sourced from Château Tanunda’s vineyard sites across the Barossa, and the fruit spends 18 months in French and American oak barrels. The result, charming aromas of blackberry, plum and pepper accompanying notes of spicy, dark berry. It’s pure, drinkable, palate-pleasing perfection, and we understand why it made the backstage list.

South Australian shiraz is no stranger to celebrity attention, and for good reason. Consistently recognised as some of the best in the world, the drop regularly takes top honours in international wine competitions and finds itself in some very famous hands.

Among them, F1 superstar Daniel Ricciardo who teamed up with St Hugo to create his DR3 wine range, including a bold Barossa shiraz, and former Australian cricket captain Ricky Ponting who co-founded Ponting Wines with his wife Rianna, a Milestone ‘127’ Barossa Shiraz in the collection.

If you’re keen to recreate a little Ricky Gervais magic at home, The 2023 vintage is now available via the Château Tanunda website.

We know good taste when we see it. Cheers to you, Ricky. Top shelf choice.
