Former Australian cricket captain, Ricky Ponting, will be showcasing and presenting his wine label, Ponting Wines, at the Marion Hotel with a special tasting session to celebrate the Platinum-win of flagship ‘366’ Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz at the Decanter World Wine Awards.
On Friday, 16 September, Ponting, who captained the Australian cricket team during the “golden era”, will be at the award-winning Marion Hurley Cellars where doting cricket and wine lovers will be able to hear him talk through his wine journey.
Ponting Wines is a collaboration between award-winning Australian winemaker, Ben Riggs, and Ponting with grapes sourced from the renowned wine regions of McLaren Vale, Coonawarra, Langhorne Creek in South Australia, and Mowbray Bay in Tasmania.
Each wine reflects part of Ricky’s life and has been carefully crafted by Ben to ensure flavour, structure, and complexity are of the highest quality. With nearly all wines in the Ponting collection adorning Internationally recognised accolades, Ricky and Ben’s dedication to their crafts is now well-established in the industry.
Guests can expect to taste a range of drops including ‘Close of Play’ Cabernet Sauvignon (from Langhorne Creek), ‘Pinnacle’ Shiraz (from McLaren Vale) and ‘Milestone 127’ Shiraz (from Barossa Valley). Also available during the tasting, will be the opportunity to purchase a limited number of the Platinum-awarded ‘366’ Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz.
A gift from Ricky to his Adelaide-fan base, he will be hosting this exclusive tasting free of charge, running over the course of a two-hour period, from 2:30pm – 4:30pm. Guests will be offered 15 mins intervals from the time of arrival, ensuring that all can experience the intimate nature of the Ponting Wines journey.
Marion Cellars Manager, Nick Limberis, is excited to welcome the Australian cricket legend into the cellar.
“Bringing Ricky and Ponting Wines to our cellars is extremely exciting for us, as well as the cricket and wine lovers of Adelaide. Not only is Ricky a huge name in cricket, but he’s also made a name for himself in the wine industry,” Nick said.
The Marion Cellars is known for its regular masterclasses where winemakers, distillers, and brewers talk through their range with customers, offering an intimate experience for those who want to develop their knowledge in these areas.
The Marion Hotel recently underwent a $20 million major redevelopment, featuring 62 new motel rooms, new bars, function rooms, a beer garden, two dining areas, as well as a new bottle shop and Cellar which boasts a three-lane drive-through and a temperature-controlled walk-in cool room.
