Legendary Australian cricketer Ricky Ponting’s newest business venture has hit the ground running and it’s only going to get bigger.

Last year, Ponting released a series of wines with South Australian wine-maker Ben Riggs, each reflecting the memorable moments in his life that shaped his story.

You’ve most likely heard of Ricky Ponting and if you’re a wine connoisseur, then you’ve probably heard of Ben Riggs too. He’s been in the winemaking business since 2001 and has won countless awards including the Great Australian Shiraz Challenge. Twice. He is also the creator of Mr Riggs Wine Co and his McLaren Vale based winery uses fruit from across all of SA’s famous wine regions.

With all that being said, you can be confident that Ponting Wines isn’t just another celebrity-backed venture but a legitimate player in the winemaking game. In fact, within its first year of production, it’s already receiving praise from the top after winning Gold at The 2021 Melbourne International Wine Competition for their Ponting Milestone 127 Barossa Shiraz.

This award-winning wine commends Ricky’s milestone innings of 127 against England in 1997 in his first Ashes Test. Other bottles give an ode to his upbringing in Tasmania, his special bond with his teammates and of course the famous battles against England throughout the many Ashes Series he took a part in.

And now that they’ve made a name for themselves, Ricky and Ben are looking to break into the international market as part of the South Australian Government’s India Market Entry Program. This program assists South Australian exporters in getting their goods across to India, a fast-growing market for Australian wines.

It’s clear to see there are big things coming for Ponting Wines and whether you’re a die-hard cricket fan or don’t know your line from your length, this team are definitely making a name for themselves and it’s great to see South Australian produce being shared across the globe.
