The Tour Down Under has officially kicked off, bringing the best racing in the world right to our doorstep. If that’s not enough reason to get excited, this year’s festivities go way beyond the peloton, as entertainment hubs, pop-up events, DJs, talks and community activations are transforming the city into one big cycling celebration. So if you’re here for the event or a local looking to get involved in the fun, there’s plenty to get involved in. But if you’re looking to actually get on the bike, there’s one event in particular that you’ll need to add to your list.
The Cool Down is a feel-good community ride and run led by two-time Olympian and professional cyclist Maeve Plouffe. Taking place on Sunday, January 25th, this one-hour cool-down session is perfect for locals, visitors, riders and runners to come together at West Beach for a relaxed session, followed by coffee and recovery.
Originally from NSW but a proud South Aussie, Maeve represented Australia at the Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 Olympic Games, and has long been passionate about cycling, community and the environment. This event brings those things together in a positive, community-forward way. Since the Tour Down Under began back in 1999, South Australia’s love for cycling has only grown, and The Cool Down builds on that legacy by looking to the future.
After witnessing firsthand the devastating impact of algae blooms on local waterways, Maeve felt compelled to act. “I’ve always cared about the environment, but seeing the algae bloom devastate our home this year really hit. Turns out, I’m not alone. Many of us athletes and outdoor enthusiasts have been left feeling completely hopeless and unheard,” she said.
The Cool Down is a result of this, encouraging people to look after their bodies post-TDU while also showing up for the planet that makes outdoor sport possible in the first place. Partnering with FrontRunners Athletes, an organisation dedicated to understanding how climate and environmental crises threaten sport, the event creates space for conversation, awareness and collective momentum.
The morning begins at 8am at Harold and Cynthia Anderson Reserve in West Beach, with participants choosing either a 5km or 10km run or a 25km ride alongside Maeve and friends. From there, participants can jump into an ice bath to soothe tired legs, enjoy music, fresh coffee and the company of others.
The first 50 registrations will score giveaways, with more surprises expected on the day, thanks to a few brands that are already on board. Registration is free but essential, making it an easy add-on to a Tour Down Under weekend packed with action.
So whether you’re in town for the Tour Down Under or simply looking for a wholesome way to start your Sunday, this is one event you won’t want to miss in South Australia.
