One of the fastest-rising stars in the Adelaide comedy scene, Brendan Goh, is presenting his first-ever full-length comedy show, “People Like Us,” at this year’s Adelaide Fringe, inviting audiences into a world filled with humour, heart, and resonating honesty.
With five shows only, running from Friday, February 16th to Wednesday, February 21st, the pop culture-obsessed comedian brings his brand of sass, wit and charm to both Drama Llama at Rhino Room and My Lover Cindi.
Born in Malaysia and armed with an Americanised twang courtesy of countless hours with the Disney Channel, the adults-only show “People Like Us” delves deep into Goh’s life as an LGBTQ individual and a self-proclaimed quirky outcast in Malaysia, offering a stand-up hour that’s as insightful as it is hilarious.
Drawing inspiration from his own journey, Goh’s material is a rich tapestry of personal experiences, navigating through themes of homophobia, rejection, and the quest for identity with a sharp, comedic lens.
“This is a little love letter to myself and anyone who is like me out there,” Goh shares, highlighting the show’s universal appeal to anyone who’s ever felt like an outsider looking in.
A two-time RAW Comedy SA Finalist and a 2023 Adelaide Fringe Fund Recipient, Goh’s credentials are as impressive as his comedic talent. Having graced stages in Malaysia, Japan, the US, and the UK and participated in the District Queer Comedy Festival, Goh’s international flair and relatable content promise an unforgettable Fringe experience.
“People Like Us” is an hour of storytelling that navigates the complexities of identity, culture, and acceptance, with Goh’s unique perspective as a gay Chinese man navigating life in Malaysia and now Australia, offering a fresh, poignant take on the comedy scene.
Whether you’re a fan of sharp wit, heartfelt stories, or just in the mood for a good laugh with a side of social commentary, “People Like Us” is the Fringe show you won’t want to miss and promises an evening of laughter, reflection, and maybe even a step towards finding that elusive boyfriend.
Brendan Goh invites you on an adventure, and as he steps into the limelight as a semi-professional comedian, his mission is clear. “I am hoping that you come in expecting a good laugh, but when you go back, you come out a fan.”
