Before getting behind the wheel for a long-weekend road trip, RAA is urging motorists to plan their journey using the RAA Rest Stop Locator App.

“There are 549 rest stops located right across South Australia, details for all of which can be found in RAA’s Rest Stop Locator App,” said RAA Senior Manager Road Safety Charles Mountain.

“12 driver reviver sites will also be operating over the long weekend and are an ideal place to take a break, especially if you’re travelling with children.

“With so many rest stops, there’s bound to be plenty for you to pick from on your journey this weekend.

“Obviously it’s best to plan your trip before you go. This app lets you search by highway, area or your current location.

“It also shows you if the rest area has toilets, BBQ’s, a picnic table, lighting and shade.

“South Australian motorists need to take the time to plan their trips and take a break at least every two hours.”

Regardless of the distance you’re travelling this long weekend, RAA is also reminding motorists that it’s important to make sure you’re properly rested before you go.

“Fatigue accounts for up to 82 per cent of serious casualty crashes in rural areas,” said Mr Mountain.

“Being awake for 17 hours straight produces the same level of driving impairment as a blood alcohol level content of 0.05 and doubles your risk of being involved in a crash.

“Being tired severely affects reaction times, concentration and decision making skills that are critical for being able to drive a vehicle safely.

“And with the Rest Stop Locator app to help you plan your journey, there really is no excuse not to pull over and take a break this Labour Day long weekend.”

The RAA rest stop locator can be downloaded from the iPhone App Store or at www.raa.com.au/reststoplocator
