Robe Surf Life Saving Club seeks green light for $2.3 million permanent facility at Long Beach

The Robe SLSC is seeking initial approval and support from the Robe District Council, for a $2.3 million permanent club facility.

The surf lifesaving club at one of South Australia’s most picturesque coastal towns and popular holiday hot spot, Robe, is seeking initial approval and support from the Robe District Council, for a $2.3 million permanent club facility.

For the past 11 years, Robe Surf Life Saving Club (SLSC) has been providing water safety and training to the local community. With a dedicated team of volunteers providing indispensable beach patrol, and keeping beaches safe, the addition of a permanent home will facilitate vital training, community events, equipment storage and more.

The proposed location for the new facility is Lot 5, Esplanade, Robe, which is currently a car park near Long Beach. By building in this location the Robe SLSC will have convenient access to the beach and in turn, provide emergency rescue services.

Both the convenience of the proposed location and the fact that the build will not encroach on any native vegetation or surrounding coastal habitat make it ideal. The club will also work with the council to find a solution for the displaced car parking.

The Robe SLSC notes that they will work closely with Coastal Protection, local Bunganditj people, the local community, and specialist consultants when considering the building design. As we wait for designs for the new Robe SLSC, the club says they envision a single-story construction, with a low roof line. There should be minimal environmental impact and sustainable and local materials should be used.

Included in the build will be emergency vehicle garaging, a first aid storage room, change rooms, toilet and shower facilities, and a meeting/training room.

The proposed Robe SLSC facility is expected to cost $2,321,400. The Robe SLSC will contribute 11% – $255,354, SAFECOM will provide 56% – $1,299.98 and the District Council of Robe has been asked to consider the remaining 33%, amounting to $766,060.
