Roberta’s Italian Take Over Means Restaurant Dining At Fringe

This slice of Italy is giving RCC Fringe-goers a more comfortable dining option, and it even comes with it’s own cellar door.

I love a good food truck as much as the next person, but sometimes you just want to sit down to a proper meal. In the case of my husband and I, when we head off to Fringe, we’ve already sunk coin into an Uber, babysitter and show tickets, so we don’t want to risk a crappy meal when it’s our ‘big night out’. Luckily for us, Adelaide is on fire with amazing dining options, alongside many of the big Fringe precincts. There’s also a new player on the scene, with a Fringe pop up restaurant appearing at Adelaide Uni.

Located towards the River Torrens side of the campus, alongside the Cloisters, is Roberta’s Italian Take-Over. Mod’Itional Italian. Other than being slightly off the beaten path, it ticks all the boxes.

Situated in the old Uni Bar, which is about to be overhauled once Fringe is done, the pop up offers up great food, ample seating, a full bar, and even a mini cellar door for wine lovers. There’s even red and white checkered tablecloths.

Roberto Cardone, director of RCC and one of the co-founders of Cibo Ristorante, is behind the simple Italian eatery, which serves up simple, delicious dishes.

The menu features favourites like piadina and piadina ripienas (grilled Italian flat bread sandwiches) for those wanting something easy, and some Italian favourites like antipasto, insalata caprese, plus a range of carpaccio.

For something bigger, there’s three fantastic pastas (we tried the pappardelle al ragu with Roberta’s Nonna’s slow cooked tomato and beef ragu, and the Paccheri Alla Pescatora tossed with tomato, gurnard white fleshed fish, salted capers, basil and chilli – both delicious) or mains including Melanzane Parmigiana (a version of Roberta’s lasagne), Tagliata di Manzo (steak) and deep fried calamari.

There’s even banging dessert options including Roberta’s Tiramisu (served by the scoop) or Tyrolean Kaiserchmarrn – Roberta’s favourite Northern Italian dessert – pancake strips fried and dusted with icing sugar and summer berry coulis.

Service is fast, so grab a meal before a show, or head there afterwards and bask in the Summer night. There’s indoor and outdoor seating so weather shouldn’t be an issue either.
