Royal Adelaide Show saddles up for Hobby Horsing debut

A cheeky April Fools’ joke has turned into a real-life competition, with hobby horsing set to make its quirky debut at the 2025 Royal Adelaide Show.

What began as a cheeky April Fools’ joke is now a full-blown, high-knee reality. Hobby Horsing is officially coming to the Royal Adelaide Show. And yes, you read that right, we’re talking stick horses, show jumps, and some seriously competitive prancing.

Thanks to Nova 919’s Jodie and Hayesy, and Drakes Supermarkets, the Hobby Horse Challenge is now open for entries, and we reckon it’s going to be one of the Royal Adelaide Show’s most talked-about events. Whether you’re in it to win it or just in it for a fun trot and a few laughs, this is your chance to be part of a gloriously quirky slice of Royal Show history.

So, what is hobby horsing, exactly? It’s like equestrian show jumping, just without the actual horse. Riders, known as exhibitors, take on a six-jump course, scoring faults for any rails they knock over and racing the clock for the fastest time.

The first-ever hobby horse challenge will be held on Wednesday, September 3rd at 10:30am at the Adelaide Showground. With two age categories, 5 to 17 years and 18+, this is a family-friendly event with serious bragging rights up for grabs. Costumes, creativity, and commitment are highly encouraged.

Nova’s Jodie and Hayesy will be on deck, helping stir up the action and hopefully clearing a few jumps themselves.

“We had a great time last year with Jodie and Hayesy’s frittata competition so when they got in touch with some new ideas for competitions in 2025, we were really excited to hear their ideas,” shared the Royal Show team.

“Within our competitions, we’ve always included categories that provide opportunities for newcomers of all ages and backgrounds to get involved, showcase their talents, and enjoy the excitement of competition.

“With existing events such as Dancing with Dogs, Longest-Eared Rabbit and Cow Dress-Ups, these light-hearted competitions celebrate creativity, enthusiasm and skill with a good sense of humour.

“Once we knew there was interest from competitors, it felt like a great opportunity to try something new.”

While the hobby horse community in South Australia is small, they are really passionate, and the Royal Show look forward to having them part of the event.

Spots are limited and entries are now live, so don’t miss your chance to become the Royal Show’s first-ever hobby horsing champion. So if you’re a seasoned hobby horser or a total novice, there’s never been a better time to saddle up.
