Cook with confidence, dress to impress and be inspired by high achievers from the global vision-impaired and blind community.
There’s all that and more in a special five-part series of lifestyle webinars launched today by South Australia’s Royal Society for the Blind.
The series is a simple, accessible and entertaining way for people with vision impairments and their family, friends and supporters to access the latest information, relevant advice and demonstrations of new products and assistive technologies.
It’s designed to arm individuals with all the information and tools they need to make the most of every day. As the RSB charter declares, this is “Your Life – Your Choice”.
Celebrity chef Callum Hann, from Sprout Cooking School, will show you how to make the kitchen your playground with RSB’s Assistive Technology cooking devices. He’ll use Explore 5 and Explore 8, talking scales, smart peelers, liquid level finders and the Seeing AI Talking Camera app to make an signature RSB dish with premium South Australian produce.
Singer/song writer Rachel Leahcar teams up with a fashion stylist and other local fashionistas to help you dress smartly for a job interview or a night out. The Seeing AI app features prominently here too, along with other Assistive Technologies like eSight and Ruby 5 to look at price tags, iBeacons to locate shops and a signature guide for signing receipts. Rachel’s an RSB ambassador and she’s determined to help you dress with style, class and confidence.
The series will also include the RSB teaming up with the National Disability
Insurance Agency (NDIA) to help people navigate their way through the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). Representatives from the NDIS and the RSB will discuss pre-planning sessions and a range of available activities designed to help RSB customers set vocational, employment, travel, family or sporting goals.
Later, there’s a conversation with newspaper columnist and expert demographer Bernard Salt who crunches the numbers on the blind and vision impaired on a national and international scale. Just how many blind and vision impaired people are there in the world and how prepared are we to meet the vision care needs of an ageing population?
Finally, the series will bring you Derek Rebelo Unplugged. The 26-year-old Brazilian surfer who’s been blind since birth, has become one of the most inspirational athletes on the planet and an in-demand motivational speaker. The man who made headlines by tackling Hawaii’s famous Pipeline surf break, is the RSB’s first international ambassador and he’s here to tell you that absolutely anything is possible.
The series is supported by trusted RSB sponsors Statewide Super and Humanware.
