RSPCA is hosting its first-ever cat and kitten adoptathon

Today, RSPCA South Australia is launching its first-ever Adoptathon, with an ambitious target of rehoming 200 animals from across its shelters. The three-day event kicks off at 10 am this morning, and will end at 7:30 pm on Sunday, February 13 (or when all available animals are adopted).

RSPCA is raining cats and kittens with 860 felines currently in its care. The organisation has rushed to double the number of cats and pocket pets available in time for the weekend.

Cats and kittens make up 78% of RSPCA’s current animal care numbers, placing immense strain on both staff and the foster care network.

Jodie Summer Head of Animal Operations at RSPCA said the animal shelter has had an influx of cats.

“When it comes to cats and kittens we are bursting at the seams,” said Jodie.

“We are coming off the back end of a busy kitten season and an unusually large intake of adult cats. It’s not as easy as just opening the floodgates – Dogs and cats are typically in our care for over 40-days before they a ready for adoption.

“Plenty of recourses go into getting a pet ready for adoption. The vet team alone has desexed 211 animals in the past 4 days in preparation for Adoptathon.

“We have more than 1100 animals in our care, with 440 currently at Lonsdale. It’s a precarious situation, which we need to alleviate for our staff and foster carers.”

Alongside adoptions taking place at Lonsdale, 40 cats and kittens will arrive at Petbarn stores across Adelaide.

Extended hours and extra appointment bookings are still available on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

One of the 860 cats looking for a new home is 3-year-old Elvis who came into RSPCA’s care in November 2021 making for a total of 64 days.

Elvis was found as a stray roaming the streets of Port Lincoln before being transported to Lonsdale shelter to undergo extensive dental surgery and treatment for feline parvo virus and FIV.

Staff have remarked on how difficult Elvis is to film as he is always swinging his hips like the king.

ALL animals available to adopt from RSPCA are desexed, fully vaccinated, been given parasite-protection treatment and vet-checked.
