Ahead of two new RSPCA South Australia Op shops opening in Seaford and Unley (bringing the total to 15), the retail spaces will become pop-up cat adoption shops to help animals find a home before Christmas.
There are currently more than 100 cats and kittens available to adopt from RSPCA’s Lonsdale shelter, and some of these felines have been relocated to Unley and the retail space inside the Seaford Central Shopping Centre for a four-day pop-up event, starting this weekend.
While RSPCA strongly advises not to give animals as surprise Christmas gifts, spokesperson Carolyn Jones said the festive season was often an ideal time to introduce a new pet to the household, provided everyone is onboard with the idea.
“Many of us are on holidays over Christmas and New Year, so if we adopt an animal during this time we’re home to help that animal settle in and develop routines that work for everyone,” says Carolyn.
“We’re especially keen to see people who perhaps have never had a pet experience the joy it brings, to share your life with one of our rescue animals.
“Cats make especially good companions for elderly people and others in single-person households, and help alleviate feelings of loneliness and social isolation.”
One recent adopter of an RSPCA rescue cat is proof that age is no barrier to owning animals. Ninety year old Merle adopted three-year-old Muffin in August, and says it is one of the best decisions of her life.
“I couldn’t imagine living without a cat and adopting an adult cat from RSPCA that’s in need of a good home has worked well for me,” says Merle.
“We named him Muffin because we have a family tradition of naming our cats after something edible, and it’s very fitting for this big boy who likes his food a lot.”
Like many animals arriving at RSPCA SA’s shelters, Muffin was sporting some war wounds from a rough life as a stray, and was not desexed.
“This cat looked a little worse for wear when he came to us, but he soon responded to some loving care and the Lonsdale team was delighted when he found a good home,” Carolyn said, adding that – like all cats from RSPCA SA – Muffin was adopted after he had been desexed, microchipped, vaccinated and received parasite prevention medication.
“When you adopt a cat from RSPCA, all those essential treatments have been done, the animal has had a thorough vet check and those caring for these beautiful animals can explain their likes, dislikes and ongoing care needs so that adopters and their animals can enjoy a happy and healthy life together,” she said.
