Today’s reopening of RSPCA South Australia’s Op Shop at Marden has brought the total number of reopened stores to four, with another four to go.

All eight stores closed on 23rd March due to the Covid-19 outbreak, but business is resuming in line with the gradual easing of restrictions.

According to Op Shop Operations Manager Meg Gill, the priority remains on ensuring safety for customers, as well as the staff and volunteers who manage the stores.

Current safety measures include:

  • strict cleaning regime throughout the day
  • Hand sanitising stations at all store entrances
  • Protective shields at checkout counters
  • Signage re-social distancing requirements while inside stores
  • Quarantining of donated items prior to them being sorted and made available for purchase

“Our team’s very happy to be back at work, and contributing funds towards the care of needy animals,” Ms Gill said.

“It’s been a tough few weeks for everyone, and RSPCA has definitely suffered a financial hit during this time, but it’s heartening to see the support our community has shown us in so many ways, from giving animals new homes to donating funds towards their care.

“Now they can again support us via our Op Shops, either by purchasing items or donating items – though I stress to people who may have found time during this shutdown period to sort through their things, please only donate items that you would happily give to a friend.

“A lot of time and money is wasted, having to discard the many poor quality or even broken items that some people dump on us.”

Staying warm is a priority for many of us right now, and the Op Shops have a huge range of quality winter wear at bargain prices, a boon for these financially challenging times.

“It’s a shock to know that Australia is now in a recession, but one sure way to rein in expenses – and it comes with the added bonus of helping animals and the environment – is to support sustainable fashion,” Ms Gill said.

The next two stores to reopen will be Warradale and Ridgehaven, on Wednesday July 1, both with restricted trading hours.

Dates for the reopening of stores at Semaphore and Blackwood are still to be confirmed.
