The RSPCA SA has launched an exciting initiative to help people who find it difficult to visit during standard opening hours. This Thursday, the new Animal Care Centre at O’Halloran Hill will extend its hours for a special “Twilight Adoptions” event. Opened just three months ago, this will be the centre’s first after-hours session, aiming to match more animals with loving families.
The event offers a unique opportunity for potential pet owners who work regular hours and find it hard to visit the centre during the day. This Thursday, the doors will remain open until 8pm. “We’re staying open until 8pm this Thursday, and we hope this gives people who might not yet have seen our fabulous new facility, the chance to drop in, take a look around and hopefully meet their new furry or feathered companion,” said Billy Tubman, RSPCA SA Animal Operations Manager. “Our community helped us to build this centre and now that we’ve settled in, we’re keen to show it off.”
Currently, the RSPCA SA is caring for 641 animals across the state with 237 temporarily housed at the new facility. The animals available for adoption include 20 cats and kittens, 23 dogs and puppies, 12 rabbits, and 2 budgies. These include a friendly white rabbit discovered in a toilet block at Cleland Wildlife Park, a yellow budgie found inside a bus, and a puppy surrendered by an owner who could not find it a new home.
In addition to adoptions, the RSPCA SA is promoting its fostering program. Recognising that not everyone may be ready for the commitments of pet ownership, they offer the option to foster, providing a temporary home for animals in need. This initiative is especially aimed at giving people a feel for what it involves to care for a pet, with comprehensive support from the RSPCA. “We definitely encourage people to talk with us about fostering as an alternate to adopting an animal,” added Tubman. “For a lot of people, the experience of fostering – with all the support that comes with it – gives them the confidence to take the next step of providing a forever home to the animal they’ve bonded with.”
The RSPCA ensures that all adoptable animals are prepared for a new home. They are all desexed, vaccinated, microchipped, and health-checked. Additionally, each dog and cat adopted during the event will receive a complimentary bag of Royal Canin food. A comprehensive health check and up-to-date parasite-prevention medications are also included, ensuring new owners take home a pet that is as healthy as possible.
To view the animals available for adoption, prospective pet owners can visit the RSPCA SA’s website at rspcasa.org.au/adopt/. This provides a helpful preview of the pets looking for a new home, helping visitors to possibly pre-select the animals they are interested in meeting at the event.
