RSPCA SA swamped with 50 kelpies as summer surge begins, seeks guardian angels for 2,000 animals

RSPCA South Australia is facing an unusually busy start to summer, taking in 50 kelpies from a single property.

The RSPCA South Australia faced an unusually early start to their typically busy summer after taking in 50 kelpies from a single property. This event, occurring just over a week ago, placed immediate demands on the organisation’s resources as a related investigation is underway. The majority of the surrendered dogs, both adults and puppies, are now in foster care awaiting permanent adoption.

RSPCA SA’s CEO, Marcus Gehrig, detailed the extensive veterinary care provided upon their arrival. “As is standard practice, every one of these dogs had a full vet check when they came in, with some requiring ongoing medical treatment,” he stated. Gehrig also mentioned that before these kelpies are made available for adoption, they will be desexed, vaccinated, receive parasite prevention treatment, and be microchipped. Added to these are extensive behavioural modifications for some of the dogs, all funded through donations.

This significant intake of dogs aligns with the launch of the RSPCA’s national Guardian Angel Christmas Appeal. This campaign seeks to generate the necessary finances to assist in the rescue and rehabilitation of over 2,000 expected animals this upcoming summer. The appeal focuses on drawing supporters to sponsor individual animals during their stay with the charity, covering all care costs until they are ready for adoption.

“Based on previous years, we expect around 2,000 animals to come into our care this summer,” said Mr Gehrig. By sponsoring an animal, donors contribute directly to meeting the needs of these animals throughout their rehabilitation and until they can be placed in new homes.

In the last financial year alone, RSPCA SA cared for nearly 6,000 animals and successfully rehomed 3,284. Currently, 750 animals are under the charity’s care, with nearly half residing at the O’Halloran Hill animal care centre. This facility and others operated by RSPCA SA play a critical role in the recovery and adoption process for a myriad of animals in need across the state.

The Guardian Angel Christmas Appeal serves as an opportunity for the community to help these animals through financial contributions, ensuring they receive the necessary care until they find a permanent home. The initiative is responsive to the seasonal surge in animals needing rescue and reflects the ongoing commitment of RSPCA SA to animal welfare.

Community members interested in becoming a Guardian Angel or learning more about the initiative can visit RSPCA South Australia’s website or contact their office. This support is vital for the organisation, particularly during the challenging summer months when the number of animals in distress tends to increase significantly.
