SA Artist Lucy Bonnin Wins Lethbridge National Art Prize

South Australian up-and-coming artist Lucy Bonnin, 24, of Maylands, has been announced as the $10,000 winner of the prestigious Lethbridge National Art Prize in Brisbane.

“I received a call from the gallery Director Brett Lethbridge inviting me to attend the opening night and thought I might be a chance to win the Emerging Artists Award for under 25s. When I received the major prize I was speechless!” Lucy said.

“I feel honoured to win such a prestigious award at my age, especially amongst so many artists I have looked up to and some who have taught me in the past.”

The Lethbridge Gallery has a strong reputation for exhibiting works demonstrating exceptional detail and creativity. The Lethbridge 10,000 was created with the intention of fostering the next generation of artists.

The art competition is open to national and international artists for small-scale artworks. Entrants may submit paintings, drawings and 2D artworks up to 60cm in any direction.

The judging criteria is based on three equallyweighted criteria of creativity, originality and skill, with $10,000 being awarded to the winner. Gallery director Brett Lethbridge said that Lucy’s artwork fulfilled all of the criteria of being original, creative and technically skilled.

Lucy’s artwork is called Jumper Jumper and was acquired by the gallery.

“It is an experimental work of a boy using resin, collage, paper & gold leaf,” Lucy said of her piece.

“I wanted to capture movement and shadow within the medium and play with the perspective, it’s a fun concept.”

Lucy currently has an exhibition called All Tied Up at Sugar on Rundle Street until the 1st of July. Her artwork will also feature in a solo exhibition at the Lethbridge Gallery, Brisbane in six weeks time.

Lucy has been a finalist in the Waterhouse Art Prize for the last two years and her work Australian Family Portrait featured on the front cover of the Adelaide Review. She has just been notified that she is again a finalist in this years Watershouse Art Prize with her piece titled Dismemblem.
