The Great Aussie Pie Competition crowned an SA bakery with the best sausage roll and the best beef veggie pasty in the judge’s search for the Best Aussie Pie!

16 judges took on the delicious task of tasting and judging over 1500 savoury baked entries from across the nation for the 35th year of the competition, which took place over four days at Melbourne’s Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC).

Across five titles, 13 gourmet sub-categories and strict judging criteria, Orange Spot Bakery in Glenelg, SA took out top gongs in the Plain Sausage Roll and Pastie titles.

The multi award winning bakery has taken out Best Pasty in Australia in ten different competitions. Even though it’s a bakery, the family owned establishment is currently ranked #16 of 127 restaurants in Glenelg.

Meanwhile, Buddy’s Bakery in Melton, Victoria took out the coveted Plain Mince Pie title with their Chunky Pie.

Another South Aussie bakery, The Little Red Grape in Sevenhill, made the pie-podium in the Seafood Pie Category for their Prawn Satay Pie.

Guest Judge Shaun ‘Pyney’ Pyne says he is looking forward to returning for next years competition.

“It was an Honor and privilege to be invited as a guest judge again this year. The professionalism in this competition is second to none and the event goes from strength to strength every year,” Shaun says.

Considered with every entry is everything from shape, size, colour, meat quality and flavour to texture, pastry, creativity and uniformity. Competitors also receive feedback from the judges to help them improve their standards.

Competition organiser, Danielle Lindsay from the Aussie Pie Council says every year the entry numbers increase.

“Our judges and pie crew put in a massive effort to get through them all,” she said.

“I’m extremely proud of the professionalism and dedication shown by all as we continue to contribute to the standard of pastries throughout the country.”
