Local children’s charity, Can:Do 4Kids, is creating an innovative Community Outdoor Play and Sensory Area at their Noarlunga Centre, which aims to provide a unique, supportive space for children with sensory and developmental challenges, including those who are blind, deaf, hard of hearing, or have low vision.
Lester Wynne-Jones, CEO of Can:Do 4Kids says, “Currently, the outdoor space at Noarlunga is nonfunctional, and we see so much potential in the space. That’s why the plans for the Community Outdoor Play & Sensory Area are so important as it will allow children, youth, families and community groups to use the area to explore in a safe, sensory-friendly environment.”
“The area will support young children who are blind, deaf, hard of hearing or have low vision or developmental delays, and may face barriers to traditional play areas. Spaces like this can make a big difference in building confidence and independence.”

This specially designed area will focus on inclusivity, making sure all children are able to participate actively and safely. The goal is to nurture confidence and independence among the children. Lester believes that specially adapted environments are crucial for children facing barriers in traditional play settings due to their physical and sensory impairments.
A testament to the project’s potential to change lives comes from the case of a young client, Jalen, who was born with Down syndrome. Jalen is presently engaging in speech and occupational therapy at the centre, and has recently progressed from managing four steps to an impressive 23 on his own. His therapists are optimistic that the new play area will significantly improve his ability to develop gross motor skills and ultimately, move towards a more independent life.

As the end of the financial year approaches, Can:Do 4Kids is actively seeking community support to bring this project to life. Funds raised will go directly towards the initial phases of construction, which are expected to begin later this year. The charity is encouraging Australians to contribute to this cause through donations, which can be made through their official website.
