Along South Australia’s coastline, Robe’s very own Long Beach has secured its place as the #8 Best Australian Beach in the 2024 rankings by renowned beach expert Brad Farmer AM.

Each year, Brad Farmer meticulously evaluates Australia’s diverse beaches, a task that has taken him to nearly 12,000 coastal destinations. The 2024 edition of his list, featuring the cream of Australia’s coastal treasures, is eagerly anticipated each year nationwide.

The top spot on this year’s list was captured by Squeaky Beach in Victoria, surprising many with its pristine quartz and silica sand, crystal-clear waters, and stunning granite boulders. Squeaky Beach’s charm extends across 700 meters and is a visual masterpiece, attracting photographers from all over. Located 220 kilometers or a three-hour drive from Melbourne CBD, it is a crown jewel in Victoria’s Gippsland coast.

However, it’s Long Beach in Robe, South Australia, that has us most excited. Brad Farmer’s recognition of Long Beach as the #8 best beach in Australia has locals excited to be among the list.

Long Beach offers unique accessibility as visitors can drive their 2WD cars right up to the water’s edge, thanks to its finely packed sand and tidal characteristics. With its gently curved shoreline and rock reefs protecting the bay, the beach boasts wide, soft waves that provide a calm and enjoyable swimming experience.

The historical significance of Guichen Bay and its sheltered waters led to the establishment of the central port of Robe in 1847. Today, Robe is renowned for its quality crayfish and iconic historic stone buildings that date back to the 1840s. The region also offers an array of dining options, including cafes, craft beer, and locally produced limestone coast wines available at five cellar doors.

Long Beach stretches for an impressive 12 kilometres, making it an ideal destination for those looking to explore longer coastlines. The beach is approximately a scenic 4-hour drive from Adelaide and a 6-hour drive from Melbourne. Visitors are advised to respect locally enforced beach safety rules, as the beach is officially designated as a road with speed limits of 25-40kmph. A car-free section is available for those who prefer it, well-marked with signage.

Robe, known for its picturesque coastal beauty, offers more to explore with nearby beaches such as Hoopers and Town Beach, the location of the Visitors Centre, and even a free beach wheelchair. Beachport Beach, a 30-minute drive away, is another attractive option, located along the Melbourne-bound road behind three captivating beachside lakes. For adventurers, the 4WD Little Dip Conservation Park is nearby, though visitors are reminded to drive with care.

South Australia’s honourable mention went to Innes National Park on the Yorke Peninsula, which is a favourite for camping, fishing and surfing.
