You can now watch South Australia’s beautiful cuttlefish swim around at all hours of the day, perfect for spending hours at home during the state’s latest lockdown restrictions.

If you’ve rinsed Netflix, Binge and Stan why not say hello to some new local underwater reality stars with huge numbers of cuttlefish currently busy in their mating season, streaming live into your living room from AusOcean’s YouTube channel.

A 24-hour live stream of South Australia’s Stony Point showcases numerous Giant Australian Cuttlefish exploring the ocean floor – sometimes more than a dozen at once!

The “cuttlefish haven,” as it’s described by nonprofit stream organiser AusOcean, is located in the Upper Spencer Gulf Marine Park, a world-famous spot for cuttlefish aggregation.

The live stream was set up by Whyalla High School students who are part of student-led science program Network Blue, an AusOcean group. Network Blue teaches students to tackle “real world ocean science and technology challenges,” having students set up the live stream and its subsequent data collection entirely themselves.

AusOcean says the Stony Point “CuttleCam” is a rare glimpse into cuttlefish aggregating in such large numbers, a grouping due to the environment and timing.

“This unique gathering every May-August is linked to the optimal rocky reef habitat which provides suitable crevices and caves which protect their eggs,” AusOcean says.

The nonprofit group has set up SA ocean live streams before, previously documenting movement in Rapid Bay. There’s lots of exciting sea life that frequents the Rapid Bay area as well, such as squid, salmon, Australian herring, zebra fish, and a whole lot more.
