SA Distillery Clean Up At San Francisco World Spirits Competition

23rd Street Distillery wins a raft of medals at the prestigious San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

South Australia’s 23rd Street Distillery is the toast of the world, with the creator of liberated craft spirits winning two double gold medals, a gold medal and a bronze medal at this month’s prestigious San Francisco World Spirits Competition (SFWSC) in California.

The Riverland-based distiller, part of Australia’s iconic Bickford’s Group of Companies, won double gold medals for its 23rd Street Not Your Nanna’s Brandy and Signature Gin, a singularly standout performance as this medal is awarded only to spirits deemed to be among the finest in the world – and only when all 43 members of the expert judging panel give the products a gold medal rating.

At the same time, 23rd Street Prime 5 Brandy was awarded a gold medal for its standard-setting quality, while 23rd Street Hybrid Whisk(e)y’s bronze medal recognises its standing as one of the better examples of whiskey at the competition.

“We are all celebrating here in Renmark what is truly an amazing achievement as it places our craft spirits right up there with the very best from across the globe, with an SFWSC medal recognised affirmation of high quality and one of the most reliable and universal indications of spirits excellence,” Twenty Street Distillery’s Head Distiller, Graham Buller, said.

“What makes it doubly special is that the four products which make up our 23rd Street range were launched less than nine months ago when we opened our new Twenty Third Street Distillery, transformed at a cost of $6.6-million, in Renmark, South Australia.

“That they’ve already made their mark on the world stage, at what’s considered the most influential spirits competition and against some 2,100 entries from every corner of the globe, is absolutely sensational.

“It’s a humbling experience too, and a credit to all involved, from our team of expert craft distillers to the growers of all the delicious local produce of the Riverland and Adelaide Hills regions of South Australia,” Mr Buller said.

The new generation 23rd Street Not Your Nanna’s Brandy has spent two years in a mix of ex- Chardonnay oak barrels to impart rich colour, smoothness and length and deliver a flavour profile that’s alluring to a new, younger breed of brandy drinkers. Its vanillin sweetness on the front palate gives way to vivacious honey and apricot flavours before finishing with soft oak spiciness.

In creating the brand’s Signature Gin, ten botanicals – including traditional juniper and coriander – were individually infused and complemented with invigorating freshness from local mandarins and limes to create a layered palate and full-bodied mouthfeel.

The 23rd Street Prime 5 Brandy has been described as “a rich and complex fruitcake-in-a-glass”, having been aged for up to eight years, some portions double and others single pot distilled, to deliver sophisticated richness and roundness.
