SA extends dining cashback to include seafood retailers, offering up to $50 savings

The South Australian government boosts support for local seafood businesses while offering delightful culinary experiences to the community.

In a move designed to boost the local seafood industry while offering delightful culinary experiences to the community, the South Australian Government has extended its popular Dining Cashback scheme to include seafood retail businesses as eligible participants under the Summer Plan’s strategic framework.

Premier Peter Malinauskas announced the extension following challenges caused by the recent algal bloom, which has significantly affected coastal businesses. The expanded scheme will now provide financial relief by offering up to $50 cashback on seafood purchases, covering a wide range of participating outlets from restaurants and cafes to local fishmongers.

The timing of the announcement coincides with the opening of the ballot for the first draw of 60,000 cashbacks. These can be used at seafood retailers and coastal hospitality venues across South Australia.

Residents can enter the draw through the Summer Plan Dining Cashback portal, with the first draw taking place on November 10. Subsequent monthly draws will continue through to March, giving South Australians multiple chances to enjoy and support the local seafood scene.

Those who aren’t successful in one month’s draw will automatically roll over into the next, unless they choose to opt out. This ongoing eligibility ensures greater engagement and continued support for South Australia’s coastal hospitality sector.

Winners will receive a unique code and detailed instructions on how to redeem their cashback. To claim, participants must dine or shop at a participating business, retain a copy of their tax invoice, and upload it—along with their code and banking details—to the dedicated portal. Successful claims will see 50% cashback deposited within five business days.

The initiative has been widely praised by industry leaders. Zoe Bettison, Minister for Tourism, said the Dining Cashback program is “an inventive method to encourage residents to experience and support coastal hospitality venues.”

She added that “every redeemed cashback not only contributes to the enjoyment of great food but also supports local jobs and communities.”

Andrea Michaels, Minister for Small and Family Business, highlighted the importance of expanding the scheme to include seafood retailers.

She said this move “enables more South Australians to enjoy premium local seafood at a more affordable price, thereby supporting the local seafood market.”

The positive response was echoed by Tony Andonas of Samtass Seafoods, who commended the government’s action, stating that “this program could significantly boost consumer interest and traffic back into seafood retail outlets, particularly following the challenges posed by the algal bloom.”

This extended initiative not only provides a timely boost to South Australia’s seafood and hospitality industries but also offers an irresistible reason for locals to discover and enjoy the state’s fresh coastal flavours this summer.

Businesses wishing to join the program can still register, with full details, terms, and conditions available on the Summer Plan Dining Cashback website.
