The Art Gallery of South Australia (AGSA) has revealed the twenty-two finalists of the prestigious Ramsay Art Prize for 2025. Each contender, including the four South Australian finalists, is vying for the huge $100,000 Ramsay Art Prize, which is supported by the James & Diana Ramsay Foundation.
This year’s edition is the fifth offering of the biennial prize, which saw a record-breaking submission of over 500 entries from across Australia. The chosen finalists include artists from multiple states, showcasing a diverse range of disciplines including sculpture, painting, photography, and more.
From South Australia, the finalists include glassblower and designer Liam Fleming, painter Lisa Khan, ceramic artist Alfred Lowe, and multi-disciplinary visual artist James Tylor.
The judging panel for this year’s prize included esteemed Australian artist Michael Zavros, Associate Professor Julie Fragar, and AGSA’s Deputy Director Emma Fey. The winner of the Ramsay Art Prize 2025 will be announced on May 30th, and the acquired artwork will join AGSA’s collection alongside works from past winners such as Sarah Contos, Vincent Namatjira, Kate Bohunnis, and Ida Sophia.
Jason Smith, AGSA Director, shared, “In its fifth iteration, the Ramsay Art Prize has cemented itself as an important contemporary art platform, celebrating the vitality and talent of artistic practice in Australia right now. Thanks to the enduring support of the James & Diana Ramsay Foundation, the Ramsay Art Prize fosters excellence and ambition, providing a platform that encourages contemporary artists to create their best work, unrestrained in scale and medium.”
The exhibition of the finalists’ works will run from May 31st to August 31st at the Art Gallery of South Australia. The event also coordinates a People’s Choice Prize, encouraging the public to get involved. This prize, sponsored by LK, awards an additional non-acquisitive $15,000 to the artist who garners the most public votes, with the winner announced on August 15th.
James & Diana Ramsay Foundation Executive Director, Kerry de Lorme, says, “We are thrilled to
celebrate the fifth Ramsay Art Prize in 2025. The Ramsay Art Prize has gone from strength to strength
since its inception in 2017, presenting the work of Australia’s most talented artists under forty and
offering them a remarkable opportunity to exhibit in a state art gallery.”
The Ramsay Art Prize will continue to offer support and exposure for Australia’s emerging contemporary artists. As AGSA prepares to present this significant collection of new works, art lovers and industry professionals alike are eagerly anticipating the unveiling of the next big name in Australian contemporary art.
