The State Government has announced it will allow trading on Sundays from 9 am instead of 11 am.
Introduced by the Government last month, the Shop Trading Hours (Extension of Hours) Amendment Act 2022 passed Parliament yesterday.
Under the new changes, businesses can still choose to open later than 9 am or not at all on Sundays and Boxing Day if they wish. Workers cannot be forced to work on Sundays and public holidays without their agreement.
These new shop trading laws strike the right balance for workers, large and small business owners, and shoppers.
The legislation includes a number of other reforms including:
- Locking in Boxing Day trading across the city and suburbs.
- Ensuring that Ministerial shop trading exemptions can only be granted after consultation with industry stakeholders and where there is clear consensus.
Peter Malinauskas said “These changes will deliver certainty for shoppers as we head into the busy Christmas trading period.
“This is sensible shop trading hours reform which strikes the right balance for workers, local small businesses and shoppers.
“These reforms will allow South Australians to shop from 9am on Sundays, instead of waiting until 11am,” Malinauskas said.
Minister for Industrial Relations Kyam Maher says “this legislation ends years of inaction on shop trading reform by the former Liberal government, and delivers certainty for shoppers, workers, and businesses about the shop trading rules in South Australia going forward,” Maher said.
The government is consulting with traders about the commencement of the new trading hours after the act receives Royal assent.
