The SA Government are fast-tracking housing for up to 300 workers in regional SA as a part of the Government’s A Better Housing Future plan.
It will allow temporary accommodation of up to two years to be built for sites in the town of Burra, located east of the Clare Valley
This measure will ease pressure on regional areas experiencing housing shortages and allow for workers to stay on site.
Two sites in Burra will cater to 300 workers employed on projects including Goyder Renewables Zone, Geranium Plains Solar Farm and Solar River Solar Farm.
Approved sites include two in Burra: the Hall Terrace and Pistol Club Road, with other additional locations to be determined by the Minister for Planning, Nick Champion.
Mr Champion says this change will not only ensure the region to flourish, but support the economic prosperity that the region contributes to the state.
“Our regions contribute more than $30 billion every year to the state’s economic prosperity across critical industries – we need to ensure country South Australia continues to flourish,” says Mr Champion.
The Regional Council of Goyder called for the change to reduce any housing barriers in the lead-up to construction of these major projects, highlighting an expected accommodation shortage over the next two to four years and a following impact on tourism within the Burra region.
“Temporary housing infrastructure utilising land that has close proximity to town
centres and project sites has a clear benefit to the community,” says Regional Council of Goyder CEO David Stevenson.
The change also gives the Minister the ability to designate further construction work to be included in the plan, which could extend to replacement dwellings for those affected by the Riverland floods.
As part of the Government’s wide-ranging program to boost land supply, the changes are being rolled out to speed up housing projects and implement rental reforms.
Another implementation from the SA Government is the Regional Key Worker Housing Scheme to facilitate the delivery of housing to attract and retain police, teachers and healthcare workers in key country areas.
