Another SA Music Awards show has come and gone, with Thursday night’s ceremony boasting an entertaining showcase of South Australia’s musical legacy and a celebration of its up-and-comers.
This year’s awards were hosted by triple j’s Home and Hosed’s Ash McGregor and Adelaide icon Henry Doyle, and featured performances from Guy Sebastian, rock band West Thebarton, indie singer-songwriter My Chérie, psychedelic rock collective Sons Of Zöku, and electronic producer DJ SVVLO.

This year, the ceremony was highlighted by Guy Sebastian’s induction into the SA Music Hall of Fame and headline-stealing indie-pop singer-songwriter Aleksiah’s four-award sweep. The solo artist was awarded Best New Artist, Best Solo Artist, Most Popular Pop Artist, and the APRA AMCOS Emily Burrows Award, which includes a $5000 prize to support her ongoing development.
Indie-rock group Swapmeet and pop-punk duo Teenage Joans took home two awards apiece, with Swapmeet winning Best Song award for their heart-wrenching track Ceiling Fan and Best Release for their EP Oxalis. Teenage Joans won Best Group and Most Popular Punk Artist.

Other notable winners of major and industry awards on the night included hip-hop trio DEM MOB for Best Regional Artist, Electric Fields for Best Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Artist, Lucinda Machin for best Studio Engineer/Producer, and Aysh Field, who won Best Cover Art for Coldwave’s, No Conflict EP.

For businesses, the historic Crown and Anchor Hotel was awarded Best Live Venue and Forest Range Studio won Best Studio. Best Large Music Festival was awarded to Adelaide Beer & BBQ Festival, and Best Small Music Festival went to Space Jams.
Finally, the People’s Choice Award was highlighted by a variety of fantastic local acts, such as Maisie B. who won Most Popular Folk Artist; West Thebarton for Most Popular Rock Artist; SONS OF ZÖKU for Most Popular Experimental or Art Music Artist; and The Munch for Most Popular Heavy Artist.
