SA Musicians Create a Live Score for Classical Music

The classic 1920s silent film The Last Laugh directed by Oscar winning F.W. Murnau, will be screened like never before in South Australia when Adelaide Cinémathèque presents the2010 ‘Silent ReMaster: Live Accompaniment to Classic Film’ program on November 29.

This unique event is presented by the society once a year and involves emerging South Australian musicians and composers creating new soundtracks to classic silent films and then performing their interpretations live at the Mercury Cinema as the films are screened.

The soundtrack to The Last Laugh will be presented with an original score by local instrumental five-piece band Doe. Comprised of serious young alternative musicians already experienced in the Australian music scene, including past and present members of Leader Cheetah, The Honey Pies, Young Hearts Fail and Poly & the Statics, their music could be described as experimental and psychedelic post-punk. Entirely instrumental, the band has a truly unique sound and will be sure to provide an unforgettable soundscape to The Last Laugh, a black comedy and true landmark film of its time. Alongside effected guitar and bass, Silent ReMasters will see Doe use floor toms with varying delay effects, violin, synthesizers and drone pedal synths.

“The Silent Re-Masters program was specifically created to foster the development of South Australian musicians looking to forge careers in the film industry,” says Mathew Kesting – curator of the Adelaide Cinémathèque program. “The quality of the work produced this year is just outstanding – with musicians performing original music live on stage should not be missed. This is a major highlight of the Adelaide Cinémathèque calendar – in what has been our biggest year to date.”
