South Australia’s Industry Climate Change Conference has kicked off today at the Adelaide Convention Centre. The conference, now in its second year, aims to provide businesses with the knowledge and strategies required to benefit from the global shift toward decarbonisation.
The two-day event will see around 700 participants in attendance. The agenda includes talks from the likes of Craig Reucassel, well-known for his role in the ‘War on Waste’, and Abigail Forsyth OAM, CEO and co-founder of KeepCup. These speakers, among others, will share the latest trends, insights, and practical approaches for businesses adapting to a net-zero carbon future.
The line-up of speakers for the conference features leaders and experts from various fields related to climate change and sustainability:
- Premier Peter Malinauskas
- Deputy Premier Susan Close
- Dr Pep Canadell – Chief Research Scientist of CSIRO Environment
- Craig Reucassel – writer, broadcaster and presenter of War on Waste
- Abigail Forsyth OAM – CEO and co-founder of KeepCup
- Jon Dee – award-winning social entrepreneur, broadcaster and campaigner
- Sarah Barker – Climate risk expert, MD of Pollination Law
- Tim Jarvis AM –2024 South Australian of the Year
The conference also highlights South Australia’s leadership in renewable energy. This recognition has recently been highlighted by the state’s selection as the preferred host for the International Conference of the Parties (COP), subject to Australia securing the bid. This role could help to elevate South Australia’s position on the global stage, showcasing its advances in renewable energy to international leaders. Hosting COP is expected to bring substantial economic benefits, contributing over half a billion dollars to the local economy.
Susan Close MP, Deputy Premier and Minister for Climate, Environment and Water shared, “The South Australian Government is committed to reducing net greenhouse gas emissions by at least 60 per cent by 2030 and achieving net zero by 2050. We brought forward our state’s 100 per cent net renewable energy generation target to the end of 2027 – three years earlier than originally planned.
“We are already a world leader in renewable energy and this conference will help local businesses to capitalise on the opportunities presented by a low carbon future.”
This year’s conference is especially timely, given the potential hosting of the COP in South Australia. This international event would further solidify the state’s role and progress in addressing climate change on a global platform.
