South Australia can be a truely romantic destination. I mean, where else can you dine inside an ethereal fig tree, or gondola down the Torrens with your loved one. So we can’t say we were surprised, when not one, but two South Australian towns landed in the list of the Top 10 Most Romantic Towns in Australia.
The list, compiled by Preply, analyzed data from Google, TripAdvisor and Booking.com to see which Australian cities are the most romantic.
To find out, Preply crunched the numbers of city-specific Google searches for phrases such as “engagement ring”, “online dating”, and “Valentines Day ideas”, in addition to descriptions of restaurants, hotels, and activities as “romantic” or “good for couples”.
After pooling this data, Preply then devised a “Romantic City Score”, aggregating the stats to give each city a score out of 5.
With Orange in NSW topping the list (who would have guessed it?), two South Aussie gems tied for the 9th most romantic cities in the country.
Victor Harbor and Goolwa nabbed the coveted spot, where romance is clearly thriving amidst the breaking waves and salty coastal air.
With a score of 3.42 out of 5, Victor Harbor and Goolwa landed just inside the top ten as South Australia’s only listings, officially declaring them our most romantic destination. The idyllic coastal strip demonstrated noteworthy volumes of interest in online dating and proposals, as well as high Google searches for Valentines Day activities.

For those seeking a romantic getaway beyond South Australia’s borders, Orange (NSW) achieved the highest Romantic City Score, topping the list with a 4.47 out of 5. Second prize was awarded to Albany (WA), scoring a 3.79 out of 5, and Port Macquarie (NSW) came third with a 3.71. The complete ranking is listed below:
